Enjoy the soothing sounds of falling water with your own backyard waterfall, simply
constructed in your open yard, garden or pond area. Waterfalls come in all sizes
and varieties. Fiberglass kits can be used for very minimal construction of a
waterfall, but most people appreciate the natural beauty of stones and landscaping
from a custom waterfall. If you have a low garden or pond area, keep your waterfall
a low, gentle slope for the best consistency of form and style for your relaxing
waterfall garden.
Step 1
Plan before you dig. Consider how high a slope you want for your waterfall and
how big a pool you want. For a shallow pool that is 12 feet by 14 feet, think
of a maximum fall distance of only 18 to 24 inches. Dig out the space for the
lower pool. Cover the base of the pool with sand, pack it down and then place
small landscaping rocks over the sand to achieve an ocean floor look. Or install
rubber pond liner to keep the water cleaner and prevent erosion.
Step 2
Mound the dirt from the pool into a straight slope or sloping steps at the side
of your pool. Shape this into a small hill, sloping down toward the pool at
the angle you wish to have for your waterfall.
Step 3

Valves let you to control the rate of the flow of water to a waterfall, sluice to a drain, or close down for repairs or maintenance. Well placed valves can make your waterfall more enjoyable and easier for regulation.

Float valve
Float valve automatically controls the level of water in your basin. Once attached to a water system and installed at the edge, the valve will prevent leakage of water. Can be hidden under edge or plants. It works like the float valve in a toilet.

Three- way valve
Three-way valve can shut off water flow, send a controlled flow to a spill way, or open a flow for draining.

Ball valve
Ball valve turn on or off water quickly away from the source, this water flow regulator operates with a one-quarter turn on the handle to start the water flow. Inside is a ball with a hole in it. When the hole is aligned with the pipe, water goes through it.

Gate valve
Where you want to make sensitive flow adjustments, use a gate valve. Turning the handle lifts or lowers a barrier inside of the valve. Lifted barrier allows water to flow freely, when lowered, it stops the water flow completely. You can regulate the barrier to any size opening to change water flow.

Backyard waterfall project is now within your budget, skill level, and materials and tools available, today to create waterfall easier than ever. You can create a waterfall anywhere in a large landscape, in a small backyard, or on a porch or balcony. However, for you to get the most exciting, and for waterfall to be successful, you must build it on the right site.

Before you decide on the ideal site, you should keep in mind several points: your site conditions, your intended use of the waterfall, climate in your region, and the location utility lines.

Finding the ideal site requires balancing all of these elements:

Slope
Choose your site. Consider the slope and grade of your backyard. The lowest site may look like good place for a basin, but it’s actually the worst. Rainwater flows into a low basin, muddying the water, knocking plants and fish. Weak drainage can also cause runoff to well up under the basin liner, creating undesirable lenses and bubbles that are lifting to surface. Placing the waterfall above lowest site prevents these problems.

It beneficiary if your site slopes. It’s a perfect place for waterfall and stream that runs from an upper basin to a lower more...
Related posts: Liners Flexible liners One of most popular materials in water feature technology is flexible liner. It allows you to create waterfall, ponds,...

Pipes and fittings allow water to flow into your backyard waterfall. The valves let you manage the route and rate of that flow. Most of the plumbing supplies can be provided by plumbing stores, home centers, and garden dealers. By choosing the right size of pipe, fittings and valves you can make pump work most efficiently. When planning your pipe directions remember, water flows best when it runs straight. Find pipe with a smooth bore, and make least sharp turns in the layout.

Copper tubing should not be used for backyard waterfall. Plastic pipe and fitting are preferred for supply and drain lines. Plastic pipe is easy to cut, assemble, and very affordable, unlike copper and other metals, it will not rust outdoors. Several different types of plastic pipe and fitting are available.

Flexible pipe is the easiest to assemble and install. If you need to put rigid pipe, look for schedule 40 PVC, (polyvinyl chloride) which is joined with solvent fittings.

Corrugated plastic pipe costs more than other plastic pipe, but it can be bent around obstacles without kinking, it can reduce the time for installing fittings.

For waterfall, from 1/2-inch to 1/4-inch pipe will be enough.

Safety
Low-voltage systems are easy and safe to install and use. The danger is 120-volt power and requires high attention to safety. Working on 120 volt lines can be life threatening, especially around water or moisture. Be sure that power is turned off, and check it with a power meter. If you’re not completely sure about working with electricity, hire an electrician.

For safety, install a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in each electrical outlet if you plan to use electrical power in or near waterfall. The GFCI senses any contact with water, and shut off the flow of electricity. Installing a GFCI requires professional skills. A less expensive GFCI outlet can be installed near the waterfall.

Calculate the electrical load needed to work your waterfall and all of its components. Pumps and other components are marked by number of watts or amps. Compare the needed power requirements with the number of amps or watts a circuit can handle.

Residential circuit breakers amps (current) x volts (potential) = watts (power). For the most waterfalls, a single 20-amp circuit is enough. If your power is more than 2,400, and you need 20 amps or more, install a second circuit.

Outdoor waterfalls are artificial decorative pieces that have a system of continual flowing water as in a real waterfall. They can have many patterns, shapes and sizes according to personal preference. Their most important components are a basin in which water is made to fall, a submersible pump which allows the water to rise up again, and a cascading slope which channels the falling water.

The common materials used for outdoor waterfalls are copper, slate and stone. All these materials are non-rusting and are not affected by water or humid air. Their heights can vary from a few inches to a towering ten feet or more. They can be designed in any perceivable color, but the common colors are brown, gray, green, beige and black. The pump, and hence the whole waterfall, is driven by electric supply and can be turned off when not required.

People place outdoor waterfalls in their gardens or backyards. These serve mostly as a curio and an attraction, beside which parties and conversations are held. Outdoor waterfalls are also designed to cascade into swimming pools to create a continuous water effect.

The sound of water splashing in the basin creates a soothing effect, which can more...
Related posts: How Backyard Waterfalls Work Backyard waterfalls are often coupled with a pond for a beautifully varied and multidimensional scheme in which the waterfall is...
