Use Hard (or “Harder”) Water in Your Pond if You Want to Accentuate the Black Portion (“Sumi”) of  Your Koi.

Though there are some exceptions to this observation, this “tip” is not new among long-time Koi owners; water with high hardness has been observed to be very conducive to the “sumi” (or black portions) of your Koi. If there are only a few black spots in your Koi (or if there aren’t any), there try using hard water in your pond. Perhaps adhering to “conventional wisdom” will bring out the “sumi” in your Koi.
